Why Hong Kong and Macau Will Always Be One of My Favorite Getaways (And How to Do It on a Budget)

6/14/2025

There are trips that surprise you --> not because they’re grand or expensive, but because they feel just right. That’s how our Hong Kong and Macau family trip felt. It was affordable, exciting, and filled with small, beautiful moments I’ll always remember.

I traveled with my sisters, Mylene and Len, and my two daughters. Five of us, hopping through busy streets and quiet alleys, bonding over food, getting “budoled” in markets, and soaking in the magic of two cities that felt so near, yet full of wonder.

If you're craving a break and watching your
budget, here’s why Hong Kong and Macau are perfect --> and how we made it happen without overspending.
Picture
Visa-Free, Worry-Free
Filipinos can travel to both Hong Kong and Macau visa-free. No embassy appointments, no paperwork stress. Just book your flight, show up with your passport, and you're good to go. We scored a promo fare from Cebu Pacific (watch out for Piso Fare promos) and flew straight from Manila to Hong Kong. If you’re lucky and flexible with dates, you can get roundtrip tickets for as low as ₱3,000 to ₱5,000.

Where We Stayed: A Family Room in the City
We chose Dorsett Wanchai, a hotel that’s both stylish and practical for families. The room was spacious enough for all five of us, and we loved the free hotel shuttle that took us to Causeway Bay, Central, and more. Since Hong Kong hotel rooms are known for being small and pricey, this one was a win. Just note --> they’re strict on check-in time. While waiting, we took a walk around Causeway Bay to stretch our legs and grab snacks.

Macau Day Trip: Free Shuttles and Big Views

Macau is just a ferry ride away from Hong Kong. We used the Cotai Ferry, leaving at 8 AM and coming back around 3 PM. Book tickets in advance to get better rates. Once we got there, we saved money by riding the free hotel shuttles offered by major casino hotels like The Venetian, Galaxy, and Sands.

Even if you’re not gambling or checking in, these shuttles are open to tourists. We used them to get around the city comfortably without spending a cent on taxis or buses. It’s a smart way to explore the city’s old Portuguese corners and grand hotel interiors without busting your budget.

Our Travel Highlights (And Budget-Friendly Tips)

🛍 Ladies Market “Budol” Alert
Yes, I was budoled into buying a Labubu keychain for 100 HKD by a very persistent saleslady. My kids found it hilarious. If you’re heading to markets, set a budget and practice saying “No, thank you.” But also, don’t be too hard on yourself if you give in to a cute souvenir.

🍜 Noodle Heaven
We skipped fancy restaurants and focused on local noodle shops and food courts. They’re everywhere, affordable, and delicious. My kids couldn’t get enough of wonton noodles, beef brisket soup, and stocking milk tea. Expect to spend around 40 to 60 HKD per meal.

🚋 Tram Rides Over Taxis
We didn't buy an Octopus card. Instead, we used Visa debit and credit cards to tap on MTRs and trams. This saved us from loading cards and made it easier to track spending. Also, tram rides in Hong Kong are charming and cost only 3 HKD --> a budget-friendly way to explore the city.

👣 Walking Tour with Heart
We joined a walking tour in Central with a local guide named Summer. Her stories about her grandparents and growing up in the city made the experience so much more meaningful. Free or low-cost walking tours are a great way to learn about a place beyond the surface.

🏨 Macau Hotel Hopping for the Views
Instead of booking an overnight stay, we explored luxury hotels like The Venetian and Sands just to admire the interiors, grab some snacks, and take photos. Hotel hopping is free, air-conditioned, and feels like a mini adventure.

How We Kept It Budget-Friendly
Here are some more ways we saved:
✔ Book flights during seat sales
✔ Stay in family rooms and split the cost
✔ Bring snacks or cup noodles from home
✔ Skip taxis and ride the tram or hotel shuttles
✔ Use credit or debit cards for transport (no need to buy a card)
✔ Eat like locals --> food courts are your best friend
✔ Schedule Macau as a day trip to avoid extra hotel nights
✔ Skip souvenir shops in tourist spots --> try smaller stores in Mong Kok
✔ Check free attractions like Victoria Harbour, Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, and Avenue of Stars

Final Thoughts
This trip reminded me that traveling doesn’t have to be expensive to be unforgettable. It just needs good company, a little planning, and an open heart.

I’ll always remember that ferry ride to Macau, the laughter during our market strolls, and the quiet moment when our guide talked about family and loss. These are the things that stay with you.

So if you’re thinking of taking a break, check those Cebu Pacific promos, book that trip, and go. Even a few days can give you memories that last much longer than your vacation leave.

Because some places feel like a dream. And sometimes, that dream is just two hours away from Manila.

Why I Always Join a Free Walking Tour on My First Day in a New City

5/29/2025

If there’s one travel habit I always stick to (aside from overpacking snacks), it’s this: I make sure to join a free walking tour on my first day (or second day if I had a looooonnngggg flight) in every new city I visit.

And no, it’s not just because it’s free. Although, let’s be honest, that’s definitely a plus. It’s because walking tours have become my secret travel hack. They help me feel connected, grounded, and excited for the days ahead- within just a couple of hours.

Here’s why I believe everyone should do the same.

🗺️ Instant Orientation
Arriving in a new city can be thrilling but also disorienting. You don’t know your way around, you’re unsure about public transport, and you might be too shy to ask locals for help.

Joining a free walking tour gives you a quick overview of the layout of the city. You’ll start recognizing key landmarks, understand how the neighborhoods connect, and get a better sense of direction for the rest of your trip.

Example:
When I visited Budapest, the guide pointed out a shortcut between Buda Castle and the Fisherman’s Bastion that wasn’t on Google Maps. That little piece of info saved me time, steps, and confusion.

💬 Local Stories You Won’t Find Online
The guides who lead free walking tours are usually passionate locals or long-time residents who truly love their cities. They’ll tell you historical stories, local myths, cultural quirks, and even some honest truths you won’t find in your guidebook.

Example:
In Tallinn, our guide explained why there’s an old cannonball stuck in the side of a church wall and shared the story of a haunted alley in Old Town. Suddenly, the city felt like a living fairytale instead of just a photo backdrop.

💸 Travel-Smart and Budget-Friendly
Free walking tours don’t have a fixed price, but you’re expected to give a tip. This setup is perfect if you’re watching your travel budget. You get to decide how much to give based on how much you enjoyed the tour and what you can afford.

Tip hack: I usually set aside around ten to 20 euros. It’s still way cheaper than most paid tours and often feels more personal.

🧍‍♀️ A Solo Traveler’s Best Friend
If you’re traveling alone, walking tours are one of the easiest and most natural ways to meet other travelers. You’re already in the same group, exploring the same sights, and chances are you’ll start chatting by the end.

Example:
In Helsinki, I joined a walking tour on a freezing winter morning. I ended up chatting with a fellow traveler from Germany, and after the tour we had lunch together at a cozy local canteen the guide had recommended. That salmon soup was unforgettable- and so was the feeling of not being alone in a new place.

🧠 Learn First, Explore Better Later
Knowing a city’s history and stories helps you enjoy it more. After hearing from a local guide, you won’t just be seeing buildings -you’ll be walking through stories and memories.

Example:
In Hanoi, our guide shared the cultural meaning of the red bridge at Ngoc Son Temple. When I went back later on my own, I appreciated the moment more deeply.

✨ Insider Tips and Unexpected Gems
These tours aren’t just about sightseeing. Guides often give amazing local tips, such as:
• where to find affordable and authentic food
• which tourist traps to avoid
• which attractions are worth your time
• and yes, even where to find clean public toilets

Sometimes, these little nuggets are the highlights of the whole experience.

🎒 Final Thoughts

Free walking tours help me start every trip with purpose. I get a better feel of the place, I learn something new, and I usually end the tour with a few great recommendations and a renewed excitement to explore on my own.

So if you’re landing in a new city soon, do yourself a favor. Look up a free walking tour, wear comfy shoes, and go soak up the stories. It’s the best Day One activity I can recommend.

Do you also join walking tours when you travel? Tell me about your favorite one!

Are You Ready to Visit the Big Apple?

My first visit to the U.S. was a family trip to sunny California, where we spent precious time with my in -laws, exploring the golden beaches and iconic landmarks. Since then, I’ve been lucky to visit the U.S. many times, each trip taking me to a different corner of this vast and diverse country. With a 10 -year multiple -entry visa issued in Riyadh, I’ve wandered through bustling cities, scenic landscapes, and cultural hubs -and every visit feels like a new chapter in my travel story.

Ah, New York City- just thinking about its electric. I still remember the thrill of seeing Times Square light up at night, tasting my first authentic New York bagel and cheese dog, and catching a Broadway show that left me in awe.

So, if you’re planning your first adventure or your tenth, the process begins with securing your U.S. visa. It might seem overwhelming, but I promise it’s manageable -and I’m here to guide you through it step by step, based on my own experiences.

Step 1: Pick the Right Visa for Your Adventure
Every trip has a purpose, and your visa should match it. Here’s a quick guide:
  • 👜 B -1 Visa: Perfect for business trips like meetings or conferences.
  • 🏖️ B -2 Visa: Great for family visits, vacations, or exploring new cities.
  • 📚 F -1 Visa: For students chasing academic dreams.
  • 🌍 J -1 Visa: Ideal for cultural exchange programs.

If you’re unsure, the  VISA NAVIGATOR WEBSITE  can help you find the perfect fit. It’s been a helpful tool for me in navigating the process.

Step 2: Tackle the DS -160 Form Like a Pro
The DS -160 form is where your journey officially begins. This online application is detailed, but don’t let that intimidate you -it’s simply your chance to tell your story. Having completed it several times, here are some tips to keep in mind:

👉 My Personal Tips for Success:
  • Jot down your application ID as soon as you start -you’ll need it later.
  • Save your progress often! Life happens, and this ensures you don’t lose your work.
  • Be thorough and honest. The more accurate your answers, the smoother the process will be.

Start your application on the  Consular Electronic Application Center website and take it one step at a time.

Picture

Step 3: Paying the Visa Fee

This step involves paying the visa application fee, which is non-refundable and necessary for your application to be processed. The payment methods available may vary, so choose the one that’s most convenient for you.

Step 4: Scheduling the Interview

Once your fee is paid, it’s time to schedule an interview at the US Embassy in Riyadh or the Consulates in Jeddah or Dhahran. Secure an appointment through the U.S. Visa Information and Appointment Services website.

Preparation Tips:
  • Schedule your interview as early as possible, as dates can fill up quickly.
  • Prepare and organize all required documents, such as your passport, photos, DS-160 confirmation page, and proof of the visa fee payment.

Step 5: Attending the Visa Interview

The interview is a crucial part of your visa application process. This is where a consular officer will evaluate whether you are qualified to receive a visa. Dress professionally, arrive early, and be prepared to discuss your travel plans and ties to Saudi Arabia.

Step 6: Visa ProcessingAfter your interview, your visa will go into processing. You can check the status of your application online. Once approved, you will receive instructions on how and when you can collect your passport with the visa.

Step 7: Planning Your US Trip

With your visa in hand, you are almost ready to explore the United States! Here are a few final tips before you depart:
  • Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned stay in the US.
  • Consider purchasing travel health insurance, as healthcare in the US can be expensive.
  • Familiarize yourself with American customs and any local laws that might affect your stay.

Important tips:
  • Keep digital and physical copies of your visa and essential documents.
  • Stay updated on any health or safety advisories that might impact your travel plans.

Securing a US visa from Saudi Arabia is the first step in your exciting journey to the United States. By following these steps and preparing effectively, you're setting yourself up for a successful and memorable visit. Safe travels!

Navigating the skies on a budget is an art, and with the right hacks, you can spread your wings without breaking the bank. Here are five most ingenious airline booking hacks to make your travel dreams a reality without emptying your wallet. Trust me on this!
1. Embrace the Art of Flexibility
The first rule of affordable travel: be flexible. Airlines are known for fluctuating prices based on demand, so if you can be flexible with your travel dates, you're already one step ahead. Use the flexible date search option on booking platforms to discover the hidden gems of cheaper flights. Consider flying midweek or during off-peak hours when prices tend to be more wallet-friendly.
2. Become Best Friends with Price Alerts
In the digital age, your smartphone can be your best travel companion. Enable price alerts on airline booking apps or websites for your desired routes. These nifty notifications will ping you when prices drop, ensuring you're always in the loop for snagging the best deals. It's like having a personal travel assistant, always looking out for your budget.
3. Miles, Points, and Travel Rewards, Oh My!
Joining an airline's loyalty program isn't just for the frequent flyers in first class. It's your golden ticket to unlocking discounted or even free flights. Accumulate miles or points through your travels and consider signing up for credit cards affiliated with airlines to enjoy enticing sign-up bonuses and exclusive perks. Your wallet will thank you, and you might just find yourself with an unexpected upgrade.

4. Play the Airport Geography Game
Sometimes, the road less traveled can be your wallet's best friend. Check prices for nearby airports, as flying into or out of a neighboring hub might be significantly more affordable. Don't forget to factor in transportation costs to your final destination; it might still be a cost-effective choice that adds a dash of adventure to your journey.
5. Outsmart the Cookies Conundrum
Ever noticed airline prices mysteriously rising after multiple searches for the same flight? Clear your browser cookies or switch to incognito mode before hunting for flights. Some studies suggest that airlines may track your search history and adjust prices accordingly. Stay one step ahead of these sneaky tactics to ensure you see the most competitive fares.

Embarking on a budget-friendly adventure doesn't mean sacrificing comfort or spontaneity. With these airline booking hacks, you can unlock affordable skies and turn your travel dreams into a reality. So, pack your bags, arm yourself with these savvy tricks, and get ready to soar without a hefty price tag attached. Bon voyage!

BIGGEST NO-NO’S DURING TRAVELS: HOW TO KEEP SAFE WHILE ENJOYING YOUR TRIP

10/22/2023

Traveling is one of life's most enriching experiences, offering adventure, cultural immersion, and personal growth. However, it's essential to prioritize safety while exploring the world. Whether you're a seasoned traveler or embarking on your first journey, this guide will help you stay safe while traveling to ensure a worry-free adventure.
  • Don't be a tourist magnet, meaning dress like a local. This doesn't mean you have to wear a traditional costume but avoid dressing like a tourist. If you're sticking out like a sore thumb, you're more likely to be targeted by criminals.
  • Don't walk around with your head buried in your screen, especially in crowded areas. This is a recipe for getting bumped into, pickpocketed, or even hit by a car.
  • Don't be an easy mark. Don't be a pickpocket's dream. This means being aware of your surroundings and taking precautions to protect your valuables. Don't flash your cash or jewelry and keep your passport and wallet in a safe place. If you're carrying a bag, wear it across your body and keep it close to you.
  • Don't get lost. It's easy to get lost in an unfamiliar city, especially if you're distracted by all the sights and sounds. Bring a map or download a mapping app on your phone and be aware of your surroundings.
  • Don't be afraid to say no. If someone is offering you a free tour, a ride, or a drink, be polite but firm in declining. There's usually a catch involved.
  • Don't be afraid to ask for help. If you're lost or confused, or if you feel unsafe, don't be afraid to ask for help from a trusted local. Most people are happy to help tourists, and they can point you in the right direction or give you advice on how to stay safe.
  • Don't eat just about any street food. Unless you have a cast-iron stomach, it's best to avoid street food, especially in developing countries. You don't want to spend your vacation on the toilet.
  • Don't drink the tap water. Unless you're sure the tap water is safe, drink bottled water instead. This is especially important in developing countries, where the water quality can be poor.
  • Don't get sunburnt. Wear sunscreen, even on cloudy days. Sunburn can ruin your vacation, and it's also a risk factor for skin cancer.
  • Don't get drunk. It's easy to let loose on vacation, but it's important to stay sober enough to be aware of your surroundings. Getting drunk makes you more vulnerable to crime and accidents.
  • Don't do anything you wouldn't do at home. Just because you're on vacation doesn't mean you should throw caution to the wind. Use common sense and be aware of the risks involved in any activity.
Traveling is a time to have fun and experience new things. So don't let safety concerns ruin your trip. Just be smart, be aware, and use your common sense. And if you do find yourself in a sticky situation, remember that you're not alone. There are always people who can help. Remember that staying safe is not about living in fear but being prepared and aware. So, pack your bags, explore, and embrace the world with confidence and security. Safe travels!

Bonus tip: If you're ever in doubt, just remember the motto of the Boy Scouts: Be prepared.

Schengen Countries with a Higher Chance of Visa Approval

10/19/2023

When it comes to planning a trip to one of the beautiful Schengen countries, obtaining a visa is often a necessary step. While the process may seem daunting, there are certain Schengen countries that historically have lower rates of visa application denial. Let me share with you some of these countries and highlight their appeal for visa applicants.

1. Greece:
I got my very first Schengen Visa thru the Greek Embassy in Riyadh many years ago. Greece, known for its mesmerizing islands, ancient ruins, and azure waters, is also considered more likely to approve visa applications. The country takes great pride in its tourism industry and welcomes travelers from around the world. Highlight your travel plans, provide evidence of financial capability, and emphasize your intention to return to your home country to boost your chances of visa approval.

2. Spain:
I have applied several times thru BLS for Schengen Visa and I got approved very fast. Early this year, I got my multiple entry Schengen visa thru BLS in just 3 days after I submitted my application at the BLS Branch in Irqah District here in Riyadh.

Spain, with its Mediterranean beaches, iconic cities, and warm hospitality, is a popular tourist destination and has built a reputation for being open to foreign visitors. I love traveling in Spain as the Spanish people share the same kind of hospitality like Filipinos.  Supporting documents showcasing your itinerary, accommodation, and financial stability can greatly enhance your visa application.

3. Portugal:
Portugal, with its stunning landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture, has been known to be relatively welcoming to visa applicants. The country offers excellent infrastructure for tourism, making it an attractive choice for those seeking unforgettable experiences. Be sure to provide all necessary documentation and meet the requirements set by the Portuguese authorities to increase your chances of success.

4. Italy:
Italy's historical sites, artistic treasures, and culinary delights make it a dream destination for many travelers. Fortunately, the Italian authorities generally have a lenient approach towards visa applications. Demonstrating a clear purpose for your visit, such as tourism or attending cultural events, along with providing comprehensive financial proof, can significantly increase your chances of receiving a visa.

5. Sweden:
Sweden, with its scenic landscapes and vibrant cities, has a reputation for being welcoming to visa applicants. The country offers ample opportunities for exploration and boasts a high standard of living. Make sure to present a detailed travel plan, including your purpose of visiting, accommodation arrangements, and financial stability, in order to improve your chances of obtaining a Swedish visa.

While Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece, and Sweden are considered Schengen countries that are less likely to deny visa applications, it's important to remember that visa approval ultimately depends on individual circumstances and supporting documentation. To increase your chances of success, thoroughly understand the specific requirements set by each country and ensure that you provide all necessary documents. Consult with the respective country's embassy or consulate for the most up-to-date information and personalized guidance throughout the application process. Happy travels!

Traveling is a thrilling adventure that broadens our horizons and enriches our lives with unforgettable memories. However, it can also be costly, causing financial stress for many. But fear not! With a little savvy planning and a pinch of creativity, you can enjoy your wanderlust without breaking the bank. Let me take you in to some expert tips on how to save money on travel while still relishing every moment of your journey.

1. Plan Ahead and Set a Budget
The cornerstone of economical travel is planning. I plan my trips at least 3 to 5 months in advance. The earlier you plan your trip, the cheaper cost you would likely have. Determine your destination, calculate the costs involved, and set a budget that covers everything from flights and accommodation to daily expenses. Having a clear budget will help you allocate funds wisely and avoid unnecessary spending.

2. Travel Off-Peak
Consider traveling during the off-peak season when prices for flights, accommodation, and attractions tend to be lower. Check holiday schedules- for example, I usually travel during Eid Holidays to Europe during Eid Holidays and avoid countries in the Middle East during Eid season. Not only will you save money, but you'll also experience fewer crowds and enjoy a more peaceful travel experience.

3. Be Flexible with Dates and Destinations
Flexibility can significantly impact your travel costs. Use flexible date search options on travel websites to find the cheapest days to fly. Additionally, be open to exploring alternative destinations with similar cultural or natural attractions, but at a fraction of the cost.

4. Utilize Travel Rewards and Miles
Frequent flyer miles, credit card rewards, and loyalty programs can be your best friends when it comes to saving on travel expenses. I usually sign up to travel-related websites, hotels and airlines reward programs to avail discounts. Accumulate points through everyday purchases and redeem them for flights, hotel stays, or other travel-related benefits. I also get free flights every now and then from airline clubs.

5. Opt for Budget-Friendly Accommodations
Consider staying in hostels, guesthouses, or Airbnb accommodations instead of expensive hotels. Not only are these options cost-effective, but they also provide an opportunity to meet fellow travelers and immerse yourself in local culture. Hostels and guesthouses in Europe are safe and solo (female) traveler friendly.

6. Cook and Dine Like a Local
Eating out every meal can quickly drain your travel budget. Instead, explore local markets, grocery stores, and street vendors to buy fresh ingredients and cook your own meals. Sampling local flavors can be a delightful experience without the hefty restaurant bills.

7. Public Transportation and Walking
Utilize public transportation or walk to explore the city. Not only is this a great way to save money, but it also allows you to discover hidden gems that might be missed when traveling by car.

8. Look for Discounts and Deals
Take advantage of discount passes, city cards, and online deals for attractions, museums, and tours. Many cities offer bundled passes that provide access to multiple attractions at a reduced price. I usually buy a tourist pass or day ticket whenever Im traveling in Europe.

9. Travel Light
Pack only what you need to avoid excess baggage fees. Traveling light not only saves you money but also provides flexibility and ease of movement during your trip. I am an avid backpacker. No fancy clothes or a lot of different shoes in a trip, I'm just all for convenience- no glamour so there's no OOTD during my trips.

10. Stay Connected Economically
Consider purchasing local SIM cards or international data plans for your phone to avoid hefty roaming charges. This will help you stay connected with loved ones and access important information without incurring extra expenses. I usually buy an eSIM before I travel. Whoever invented the eSIM deserves so much credit. It's so highly recommended if you want to stay connected all the time while enjoying your trip.

11. Explore Free and Low-Cost Activities
Research and discover free walking tours, parks, beaches, or hiking trails in your destination. Engage in activities that won't dent your wallet but will enrich your travel experience. I make it a point to join a free walking tour every time I visit a city for the first time. It provides an economical way to delve into the culture and history of a city, allowing me to explore key landmarks and attractions without emptying your pocket. Also, the local guides, often with deep-rooted connections to the city, share insightful stories and anecdotes that are not found in guidebooks. This personalized touch gives me a unique perspective and a deeper understanding of the local culture and way of life.

12. Negotiate and Haggle Responsibly
In many destinations, haggling is a common practice. Negotiate prices when appropriate, but always do so respectfully and in a friendly manner.

13. Use Cash Wisely

While credit cards offer convenience, some places may prefer cash. Withdraw money in bulk to avoid frequent ATM fees and exchange currency at reliable sources for the best rates.

14. Avoid Tourist Traps
Research your destination thoroughly to identify notorious tourist traps. These areas often have inflated prices, so try to steer clear or be cautious with your spending when in such locations.

15. Share Costs with Fellow Travelers
If you're comfortable doing so, consider sharing costs for transportation, accommodation, or meals with other travelers you meet along the way. Splitting expenses can be a significant money-saver.

Traveling on a budget is not about sacrificing quality; it's about being smart with your resources. By following the above-mentioned tips and tricks, you can embark on incredible adventures without compromising your financial stability. So, pack your bags, set your budget, and get ready to explore the world affordably and responsibly! Safe travels! 🌏✈️
